On testing: many schools that previously moved to test-optional policies have returned to requiring SAT or ACT scores, including MIT, Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Stanford, and others. Do not assume test-optional is the default at your target schools. Check each university's admissions page individually.
UK Applicants: UCAS Deadlines and the New Personal Statement Format
UCAS opened for 2027 undergraduate entry in May 2026. Students cannot submit completed applications until September 1, 2026, but the drafting and research work should be happening now.

Ontario secondary school students applying to Ontario universities use the OUAC 101 application. One application covers every Ontario university: you list the programmes you want, and OUAC transmits your information and grades to each institution. The OUAC 101 deadline is January 15, 2027. Applications submitted by that date receive equal consideration from every Ontario university.
The straightforwardness of that date can be misleading. Competitive programmes, supplementary applications, audition or portfolio requirements, and major entrance scholarship deadlines can fall in the autumn or early winter, well before January. Some of these earlier deadlines are not prominently advertised. Guidellor recommends checking the admissions and awards pages for each programme on your list now, not in November.
On the other end of the timeline, no Ontario university can require students to accept an offer or pay a deposit before June 1, 2027, giving families meaningful time to weigh options before committing.
Scholarships deserve particular attention regardless of which system you are applying through. For rolling-admission schools, your submission date directly affects scholarship eligibility. Submit early and you are competing for full merit award pools; submit late and those pools are significantly depleted. This is one of the least discussed practical reasons to apply early, and it applies across systems.
Building Your University List: Research Before You Write
Before any essay is written, you need a considered list of where you are applying and why. This is genuine research work, and it produces better applications because it helps you write specifically rather than generically.
For each university on your list, consult the official admissions page and check: minimum grade requirements and prerequisite subjects; testing policy, which has shifted at many institutions; programme-specific requirements such as portfolios, auditions, or supplemental applications; and financial aid or scholarship eligibility for your student category.
Guidellor recommends thinking about institutional fit alongside academic fit. Consider size: whether you prefer a campus of under 5,000 students or one of more than 30,000 changes the experience substantially. Consider setting: climate, region, and distance from home all affect daily life and wellbeing in ways that rankings do not capture.
For UK applicants, most universities host undergraduate open days throughout summer and autumn 2026 for students intending to start in September 2027. Open days typically include campus tours, subject talks, student finance sessions, and conversations with current students and admissions staff. Attending in person, where possible, gives you specific material for your personal statement and helps you make more honest choices about your final five UCAS selections.
On recommendations: regardless of your target system, now is the right moment to approach teachers. Identify two or three educators who know your academic work in depth, ask them formally before the new school year begins, and give each one a clear picture of your accomplishments, activities, and target schools.
